Memorial Gifts

Recently, God saw fit to call Ms. Betty home to heaven. Betty was a wonderful friend and a loving member of our Word of Life family. Her body was laid to rest at Fort Sam National Cemetery, but her soul is celebrating in heaven with Jesus. The Tolsma family has indicated that gifts in Betty’s memory be made to the Word of Life Ministry Facility Fund. Memorial gift envelopes are available on top of the offering box. Please continue to remember the Tolsma family, and all who mourn Betty’s passing, in your prayers.

Backyard Vacation Bible School

Think of kids laughing, playing and running around on a sunny day in the summer. Now, think about those same kids doing this in your own backyard. Why are they so happy? You are hosting a Backyard Vacation Bible School (VBS) where these kids are learning about Jesus and having the time of their lives while doing it.

If you thought having a VBS was only for churches, you're wrong! The idea of a Backyard VBS is becoming very popular throughout the world. It makes a great way to reach out to your un-churched neighbors through one of the best resources they have...their kids! When kids get excited about Jesus, parents get excited, too.

How can you get involved with a Backyard VBS this summer?

Pray. Ask God if hosting a Backyard VBS is right for you. Remember, you don’t have to have kids of your own to host a Backyard VBS.

Age Group. What age group will you target? Maybe you want to focus on preschool age (ages 3 to 5). Perhaps you want to try a mixed age group with age appropriate break out activities.

Curriculum. Be a part of the team reviewing readymade materials available from Christian publishers. They’re taking into consideration Bible truths, ease of use, fun ideas and cost in order to choose the best curriculum for use this summer.

Do some initial planning. How long will your VBS run? Will it be one hour a day for five days, three hours a day for three days, one night a month for each month of the summer? What month works best?

The unique thing about having a VBS in your backyard is that neighbors who do not normally attend church will feel more comfortable going to a neighbor's house than inside a church. While they are at VBS you can naturally share information about Word of Life. Don't be pushy. The idea is to get kids excited about Jesus, which in turn may get their parents excited as well. Ready to get started? Sign up on the RSVP form this Sunday or contact David White, 650-3166.

Word of Life Drill Team

The Schertz Fourth of July Jubilee is coming! The annual parade will take place on Saturday, July 3. This year will see a return of the “famous” Word of Life Drill Team! We need YOU to be part of the Team?

  • Are you willing to walk a few miles in the July, Texas heat?

  • Do you have a great sense of humor?

If so, you’re in! We’ll even provide your uniform (Word of Life t-shirt.) In addition to drill team members, we’ll also need someone to design/construct our drill team banner and someone to drive the drill team SAG wagon. Want to know more? Contact Mark Stemmermann, 508-2073, Toby Molina, 705-9578 or Patti Mitschke, 862-2075.

Painful Fun

The crumbling, old church building needed remodeling, so the preacher made an impassioned appeal, looking directly at the richest man in town. At the end of the message, the rich man stood up and announced, "Pastor, I will contribute $1,000."

Just then, plaster fell from the ceiling and struck the rich man on the shoulder. He promptly stood again and shouted, "Pastor, I will increase my donation to $5,000."

Before he could sit back down, plaster fell on him again, and again he virtually screamed, "Pastor, I will double my last pledge."

He sat down, and an larger chunk of plaster fell hitting him on the head. He stood once more and hollered, "Pastor, I will give $20,000!"

This prompted a deacon to shout, "Hit him again, Lord! Hit him again!"

Just a Thought

"Dr. Andrew Bonar told me how, in the Highlands of Scotland, a sheep would often wander off into the rocks and get into places that they couldn't get out of. The grass on these mountains is very sweet and the sheep like it, and they will jump down ten or twelve feet, and then they can't jump back again, and the shepherd hears them bleating in distress. They may be there for days, until they have eaten all the grass. The shepherd will wait until they are so faint they cannot stand, and then they will put a rope around him, and he will go over and pull that sheep up out of the jaws of death. "Why don't they go down there when the sheep first gets there?" I asked. "Ah!" He said, "they are so very foolish they would dash right over the precipice and be killed if they did!" And that is the way with men; they won't go back to God till they have no friends and have lost everything. If you are a wanderer I tell you that the Good Shepherd will bring you back the moment you have given up trying to save yourself and are willing to let Him save you His own way." - Dwight Moody
