Building a Bigger Heaven in Brazil

In our prayers this week, we’re lifting up missionary pastor André Plamer and the people of Cristo Para Todos, as they reach out to people in Osasco, Brazil and beyond. We support their work through the gift of 10% of our Sunday morning offerings to the Brazil Mission Society (BMS). To find out more about BMS, visit www.brazilmissionsociety.com.

Congregational Assembly

Please plan to attend our annual congregational assembly on Sunday, August 23. Here’s what’s on the agenda:

  • final congregational approval of the Constitution & Bylaws approved by Texas District,

  • set the number of members to serve on the Leadership TEAM (the Leadership TEAM recommends seven plus pastor),

  • approval of Leadership TEAM members (nominees include: David Christiansen, John Goeke, Mike Hilman, Toby Molina, Greg Peterson, David Smith and David White),

  • approval of the 2010 Ministry Financial Plan, and

  • intention to call pastor Ken using a fast track process and to ask District for approval to do so.

Copies of the Constitution & Bylaws and of the 2010 Ministry Financial Plan are available at the Info Table.

After worship and take-down we’ll share lunch, then get down to the business of our meeting. Depending upon the first letter of your last name, we suggest you bring the following:
A–G: side dish (salad, vegetable, etc)
H–O: main dish
P-Z: dessert
Please bring a generous portion, so there’s enough for everyone!

Childcare help needed: We also need a couple of volunteers to help this Sunday by watching our younger children while their parents are involved in the meeting. If you would like to help, please contact Donna Molina, 705-9586.

NEW! TeleCare

You may receive a phone call from a member of our new TeleCare ministry. If you do, take a couple of minutes (more if you want) to talk. If called, you may be asked how you're doing or if you have any prayer needs or thanksgivings. We value relationships and relationships are built on communication. While LifeGroups are the best way to build relationships at Word of Life (You are in a LifeGroup aren’t you?), TeleCare strives to care through communication by phone. If you'd like more information about our new TeleCare TEAM, please contact Mary Flowers, 658-4130.

Building/Land Fund

Word of Life is currently receiving 2.78% apy on funds specifically designated for building. Where do we get such a great rate? Through Texas District Church Extension Fund (CEF) of course! To see the rates you could receive, go to www.TexasCEF.org. To make a special donation to the Word of Life Building Fund, just write "Building Fund" in the memo line of your check and drop it in the offering box this Sunday morning.

Confirmation

Recently we heard students share their profession of faith. They helped us understand just a bit of what they learned through two years of instructions with Pastor Ken in Confirmation. Now, it’s time to begin Confirmation studies for the new academic year.

Students in 7th and 8th grade are invited to learn more about their Christian faith and continue the process of becoming passionate followers of Christ through Confirmation instruction. Confirmation classes explore primary Christian teachings and help students develop the means to share their faith publicly. If you have a student in 7th, 8th or even 9th grade, please plan to join Pastor Ken for a Parent’s Meeting on Sunday, August 30 at 9:45 a.m. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Ken at Ken@WordofLife4u.com or 566-2237.

Educator Sunday

Teaching is a valuable but often overlooked profession. As area schools gear up for the 2009—2010 school year, we want to let educators know we appreciate them. We’re making plans for our annual Educator’s Sunday to be held on September 13. In the past we’ve provided snacks to area schools, given away special gifts to educators, included prayers and recognition for educators in worship and had special skits or videos to honor our educators. Have ideas about what to include in our celebration? Want to be in on the planning? Get in touch with Patti Mitschke, 566-1650 or Patti@WordofLife4u.com

Answered Prayer

Members of the Grace Prayer Team have prayed for jobs, healing, comfort, restoration and much more. They have seen many examples of God’s intercession into the situations of our lives. They also know that many of you have experienced reaffirming examples of God’s mighty presence. The team is compiling a quarterly newsletter and they would like to add your story of answered prayer. Please share YOUR story with Betty Tolsma, bettytolsma@sbcglobal.net.

Texas District Convention

The 58th Convention of the Texas District is now history. To review highlights from the convention, please visit www.txdistlcms.org/convention.html. Review a summary of each day's activities, view podcasts of interviews with delegates and speakers, view videos of the Mission and Ministry Facilitator (MMF) presentations and a "sight and sound" media summary of the Convention.

A Ministry in Need of Help

Iglesia Luterana Cristo Nuestro Salvador (Christ Our Savior Lutheran) Daycare is located in central San Antonio, in an older part of the city. The Daycare Center accepts children from 6 weeks to 5 years and exists to care for the whole child: physical, emotional, social and spiritual. The Center serves many children from the Sam’s Shelter, a temporary living facility for homeless families and many children of lower income single parents as well as foster children placed by Child Protective Services. Because of the current economic environment, enrollment is down and the Center is struggling financially. You can help this vital ministry in a number of ways: 1. Please pray that God would continue to bless this ministry so it can be a blessing to many children in need. 2. Tell parents in the area (5323 Blanco Rd.) about the quality care provided at the Center. 3. Give financially to support the work of the Center. Make your check payable to Word of Life and write “Ministry in Need” in the memo line.

Husband 1.0 Funny

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a slowdown in the overall performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications that had operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0 and NBA 3.0. And now Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and House Cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?

Signed,
Desperate

-------

Dear Desperate:

First keep in mind; Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Try entering the command C:// I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME and download Tears 6.2 to install Guilt 3.0. If all works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will create Snoring Loudly.wav files. Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-Law 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program. These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have a limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider additional software to improve memory and performance. I personally recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Lingerie 6.9.

Good Luck,
Joyce at Tech Support
