One evening in the winter of 2001, Pastor Ken Mitschke and several others were making phone calls to the people in the greater Schertz area. They were letting people know that a new church was starting in Schertz and would be having its Grand Opening in January, 2002. Over the course of two weeks, these dedicated callers made 3,000 phone calls. One of those calls was answered by Debbie Milligan. Here’s how God used that phone call to touch Debbie’s life:
As a child I went to church with my family and then alone when they stopped going. I went some as a teenager until I found that things weren't as they seemed in the church so I quit going. I never lost faith in God, just the congregation. I have a daughter that I have brought up to pray and thank the Lord for her blessings, but found a way to dodge her when she wanted to find a church to attend. I had already been down that road and wasn't sure if I wanted that again. I did my praying and thanking God alone.
One night in December 2001 I received a phone call, from Pastor Ken Mitschke, that changed the lives of both my daughter and myself. I have had calls about new churches and said I would like to check them out, never going. The gentleman on the other end was so happy and full of excitement as he told me about this new church that was to start on January 27, 2002 at 10:45 (my kind of time). It sounded like a neat place so I said I would be there. I told my daughter about it and she was excited as well. I actually found myself counting down the days!!
The road my life has taken since that phone call has been an incredible journey. I now honestly know the meaning of "my cup runneth over." See this call came at a dark time in our lives when there was little light or hope of a bright future. I never lost God but was not as close to him as I needed to be and he never gave up on me. I crave the Word of God and am so excited about renewing my relationship with Him. My new family at Word of Life has been a comfort when I needed it, a shoulder to cry on and friends to laugh with. We have made many new happy memories and I can't wait to add more. My daughter is part of an awesome youth group and I am so proud of her for acknowledging Christ as her Savior. She shares in my love of God and our church and I am so blessed. I do not like the thought of where my life might be if it hadn't been for that call.
On Sunday, March 23, 2003, Kristin Milligan was baptized and Debbie and Kristin were confirmed, and it all started with a phone call!
