Good Friday Tenebrae The Tenebrae is a traditional Good Friday service dating back to the seventh or eighth century A.D. It impresses upon us the terrible consequences of sin and the magnitude of the Savior’s sacrifice for us. The service recalls seven key events from the final hours of Christ’s earthly life as recorded in Matthew, each paired with a hymn to enhance our contemplation and response to the passion of our Lord. He receives a crown of thorns instead of glory. Though He is put to death, He remains alive eternally. While He faces ridicule today, He will be honored forever. Despite our disbelief and disobedience, He adopts us and gives us His presence. We end His life, yet He gives us life. This moment is both an act of crucifixion and a crowning—for Him, and for us.
