Be Confident
Earthly wealth is useful—it helps us buy things and pay our bills. But it comes with hidden traps. Our desire for temporary earthly riches can overtake our desire for our heavenly Father and the eternal gifts He abundantly gives. So, where will you place your confidence: in temporary riches or in the everlasting treasures of God?
[Jesus said,] “Therefore, if you can’t be trusted with wealth that is often used dishonestly, who will trust you with wealth that is real? If you can’t be trusted with someone else’s wealth, who will give you your own? A servant cannot serve two masters. He will hate the first master and love the second, or he will be devoted to the first and despise the second. You cannot serve God and wealth.” Luke 16:11-13 (GW)

Dead to Despair
I’m always so impressed when I see footage of someone who doesn’t flinch when threatened with a punch or a slap. People with ice in their veins. Traditionally, there are two natural responses to threats: fight or flight. I’d offer a third: freeze. While we tend to think of this on an individual level, it happens to whole groups of people just the same. Look at the allies on the brink of WW2 – they froze in despair. Look at the nihilism of Soviet-era peoples – it was a show of desperation.

Awaiting the King
Christians are totally humble, servants of all people. Christians are totally free, subject to no one. Both are true. Jesus tells the world that humans are supposed to serve indiscriminately. He also tells us not to put our hope in mortal men. Jesus Himself is our king, and he will return to fulfill his reign – giving eternal life to all whose hope is in him alone.
