The Cost of Following

Many of us want the beauty of Christianity without the burden of surrender. We cling to safety nets – our careers, our reputations, our comfort – then try to follow Jesus on our terms. But in Luke 14, Jesus shocks the crowds: discipleship is not optional, not selective, not “half in, half out.” The cost is everything. Yet here’s the Gospel: while the cost is everything, the reward is infinitely greater – Christ Himself. And the price has already been paid by Him on the cross. This Sunday we’ll ask: Where are we clinging to safety nets instead of Christ? And as a church, are we encouraging comfortable Christianity, or calling one another into true discipleship? Join us as we journey “From Pride to Purpose” in Luke’s Gospel.

👉 Watch online and discover how Jesus’ humility reshapes our lives.
👉 If you’re local, come sit with us in person next Sunday – we’ll save you a seat.

The Disciple’s Habits

I like some of the t-shirts I see at the gym these days. Some of them point out that a lot of what we do at the gym is kind of absurd. “I lift heavy circles,” and “I pick things up and put them down.” And it’s true that, reduced to its parts, one can easily point out the absurdity in weight training.

When I’m talking to guys who are younger than me, I sometimes tell them that if they’re lifting weights just to lift heavier weights, then they need new motivation. Exercise is supposed to help you OUTSIDE the gym. In fact, ALL habits should serve a purpose other than themselves. A habit done for the sake of habit is completely pointless.

The Disciple’s Hero

When I was young, I loved Peter Pan. Before I started elementary school, the principal already knew me because we dropped off my older sister every day, and every day I was dressed up in the tattered green tunic and hat with a feather. I would watch the movie and run around the house as if I were flying.

Jesus is the ultimate hero. But he’s not a fantasy, and his life is one that even the poorest can imitate well. Not only did he show us, but he also told us, “they will know you by your love,” and, “go and teach them everything I commanded you – baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”

Jesus is the main character. The perfect hero. And our focus on Him enables us to – imperfectly – be conformed to the mold he cast.
