The Cost of Following

Many of us want the beauty of Christianity without the burden of surrender. We cling to safety nets – our careers, our reputations, our comfort – then try to follow Jesus on our terms. But in Luke 14, Jesus shocks the crowds: discipleship is not optional, not selective, not “half in, half out.” The cost is everything. Yet here’s the Gospel: while the cost is everything, the reward is infinitely greater – Christ Himself. And the price has already been paid by Him on the cross. This Sunday we’ll ask: Where are we clinging to safety nets instead of Christ? And as a church, are we encouraging comfortable Christianity, or calling one another into true discipleship? Join us as we journey “From Pride to Purpose” in Luke’s Gospel.

The Lowest Seat

From Pride to Purpose | Luke 14:1–14 | Why Jesus Calls Us to Take the Lowest Seat

Have you ever caught yourself silently competing for the “best seat” – whether at a wedding, at work, or even in church?

In Luke 14:1-14, Jesus disrupts our pride-driven instincts and flips the world’s rules of honor upside down. He teaches that “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

This sermon explores how pride poisons our relationships and isolates us, and how Christ Himself took the lowest seat – at the cross – so that we could be lifted up and seated at God’s table. Drawing from C.S. Lewis, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and the Gospel itself, we’ll see that true spiritual maturity begins with humility, and tiny hidden acts of grace in daily life.

If you’ve ever wrestled with comparison, envy, or the pressure to prove yourself, this message is for you.

Created for Purpose

45% of middle and high school students say their life is not useful – a huge increase from the 25% recorded in 2000 and up nearly 10% from the beginning of the pandemic (Monitoring the Future). The devaluation of human life and increase of purposelessness has led to increases in self-harm and other destructive behaviors and addictions. We have forgotten we are made and created for purpose. Receive extremely rich kindness and renewed purpose from your Creator this Sunday.
