A polished “yes” can still conceal a settled “no.” Jesus tells of two sons: one son who refused his father’s request to work a vineyard, but later repented and went; and another who answered beautifully but never actually did anything. Who actually refused? The second son was all talk. His mouth reached the vineyard. His feet never did. Every Christian life has that seam: the distance between what we confess and how we live. But the answer is not a stronger promise or a more impressive performance. Our rescue is the righteous Son whose mouth and feet were never divided. At the cross, Christ bears our “no.” We are justified when God counts Christ’s “yes” as ours. Then, because God is at work within us, forgiven sinners get up and go.
